Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy (FT-IR/PAS) has been used to examine surfaces of composite solid propellants. Depletion of crystalline energetic material from extruded surfaces, and of plasticizer from aged surfaces, has been documented. In addition, a method has been developed to determine the mass per unit area of graphite on coated propellant surfaces.
