The Compton profiles and x-ray scattering factors predicted from the calculations of Kunz based upon the local orbital theory of Adams and Gilbert are compared with the results of Hartree-Fock free atom calculations and with experimental data. In the case of argon and atomic aluminum the results are of Hartree—Fock accuracy, but for solid aluminium they are significantly worse indicating that the local orbital method is unable to describe metallic behaviour.
