Calculation of mean net assimilation rates (NAR) soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) using the Briggs, Kidd and West equation (assuming plant weight (w) and leaf area (l) were linearly related) gave values very similar to those obtained when allowance was made for α (in the equation w = k + mlα). The regression method for estimating NAR involves fitting curves of the type loge w = a + bt + ct2 and loge l = a1 + b1t + c1t2. Residuals in these regression equations (observed — calculated values) were significantly affected by both plant population and cultivar, and the NAR's calculated from these regressions reflected this bias.
