Hawaii-grown ‘Sharwil’ avocados were shown to be nonhosts for Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), melon fly, Dacus cucurbitae Coquillett, and oriental fruit fly, D. dorsalis Hendel, at the mature green harvest stage of ripeness. No fruit fly infestation was observed in 1,096 (ca. 421 kg) ‘Sharwil’ avocados sampled over a 3-year period, although 10% of the fruits possessed natural surface damage of various types. Induced field infestation studies with 183 (ca. 83 kg) ‘Sharwil’ avocados caged on the tree produced no fruit fly infestations, whereas 189 (ca. 80 kg) artificially damaged avocados produced one C. capitata and one D. dorsalis infestation.
