The authors describe the principles of operation, practical construction and use of a probe that is capable of measuring simultaneously the electric field at a metal surface and the electric charge arriving at that surface. This type of probe has many possible applications and an example is given of its use in the study of space-charge injection and movement in a high-voltage discharge.
