The spatial distribution of dislocations produced by scratching along different directions on the (001) and (111) planes of NaCl and LiF is investigated. A study is also made of the distribution produced by pyramidic indentation on the (111) surfaces. The mobility of dislocations in the dislocation bands produced by the scratches is studied. The slip planes responsible for the propagation of the deformation into the crystal are determined. The anisotropic hardness observed experimentally is explained qualitatively.
