Near-normal incidence polarisation-dependent reflectivity spectra have been measured for the quasi-one-dimensional trichalcogenides ZrSe 3 and ZrTe 3 . A strong directional dependence in the spectra is observed. However, the general strengths for optical transitions in different directions are similar.
