Simultaneous stress-strain photoluminescence is observed in MgO by monitoring emission while a crystal is deformed in compression and excited with ultraviolet light. In addition to the photoemission during plastic deformation as reported earlier for CaO and SrO, photoemission is reported in the pre-yield region of the stress-strain curve, as well as during stress relaxation. A comparison is made among photoemission and other types of emission in deformed MgO.
