We show that double exchange does not always favour the ferromagnetic spin state. In transition metal oxides with strongly hybridized dp bands, the energy of conduction electrons can be minimized by an incommensurate helicoidal ordering of local spins. This explains the magnetic order observed in the iron perovskites SrFeO 3 and CaFeO 3 . This homogeneous helicoidal state is stable against phase separation in a wide interval of electron concentrations.
