The yellow pigment (Sepiapterin), occuring in the eyes of Drosophila melanogaster, decomposed to one mole each of 7, 8-dihydroxanthopterin and lactic acid accompanied by consumption of 0.5 mol. of oxygen. From this ragements and from the results of its photodecomposition and periodate oxidation, it is concluded that the compound has the structure 2-amino-4-hydroxy-7, 8-dihydro-6-lactylpteridine (III).
