The radioprotective drug S-2-[3-aminopropylamino]ethyl-phosphorothioic acid (WR-2721) was studied as a possible improvement in the radiotherapy of primary urethan-induced lung tumors in the mouse. As in our observations of transplanted tumors, WR-2721 doubled the radiation resistance of the normal tissues in the radiation field but did not protect against lung tumors. Thus we conclude that the differential protection offered by WR-2721 is not the product of artificial factors found only in transplanted systems, and that it is a prime candidate for application to radiotherapy.
