Utilization of electrophilic fluorinating reagents in late-transition-metal-mediated transformations is a rapidly growing area of research. Oxidation of organo-palladium or -platinum compounds with such reagents leads to complexes in a high oxidation state that can undergo reductive elimination reactions. Thus, electrophilic fluorination can be directed toward the selective formation of C–C or C–X bonds under conditions often complementary to those used in the reactions assisted by metals in low oxidation states. The nature of the ligands and complex geometry can influence the outcome of the reductive elimination step and can be particularly important in bond-forming processes.
