Relative intensities have been measured at maximum luminosity in the visible continuum emitted by shock-ionized argon, krypton, and xenon. The attendant physical conditions at local thermodynamic equilibrium were 0.5 eV ⪝ temp. ⪝ 1.5 eV, 0.5 ⪝ press. ⪝ 2 atm and 10−2 ⪝ degree of ionization ⪝ 0.25. The dependence of the data on electron concentration and temperature correlates well with the Kramers-Unsöld theory, indicating that free-bound electron transitions are the primary source of the continuum.
