Hot shock compaction features of the fine (0.5 {mu}m) and coarse (200 {mu}m) {alpha}-alumina powders were investigated by microstructural analysis. Compared to the coarse powder, which fragments even under hot shock compression, the fine powder is relatively plastically densified in the process. Hot shock compaction reduces the redundant shock energy and optimizes the distribution of the shock energy for powder consolidation.
