The effect of photoperiod on the initiation of reproductive tissues in Ascophyllum nodosum has been examined. Receptacle initiation was promoted under 8: and 12: photoperiods and inhibited under a 16: photoperiod and under continuous irradiance. A white light night-break inhibited the SD response. The results are discussed in relation to the phenology of A. nodosum and photoperiodism in some other macroalgal and higher plant systems.
