It was demonstrated the possibility that the spontaneous spike in the guinea pig taenia caecum was due to Ca++ entry, when Na+ in the bath fluid was reduced or abolished (1-3). Furthermore, in Na+-free (tris) solution acetylcholine slightly depolarized the membrane but no change in spike frequency was observed (4). The aim of this paper is to study the effects of a reduction in external Na+ concentration on the actions of acetylcholine, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and oxytocin on smooth muscle preparations.
