The causative agent of pleuropneumonia of cattle was isolated by Nocard and Roux as early as 1898. It proved to be a polymorphous filterable organism. A similar microorganism was recognized as the cause of agalactia of sheep and goats (1923 Bridre and Donatien) (1). Several organisms related to the pleuropneumonia organism1 were later discovered and described by Klieneberger, Sabin, Dienes and others (1935-1940) (1). The work of these authors has been especially important for the subsequent study of the representatives of the pi. pn. group.
