The KKR band structure method is developed to obtain suitable expressions for band gaps in both ordered and disordered semiconductors. The theory is applied to three cases: firstly to the bottom of an s-band to allow comparison to be made with the theory of Wigner and Seitz, secondly to the crystalline semiconductors diamond and germanium, and thirdly the cancellation of the free particle density of states is explicitly demonstrated for free bands in amorphous materials.
