Chiral transformations are discussed phenomenologically, beginning with the known properties of the low-energy πN system. The treatment of ππ scattering emphasizes the ambiguity in the connection between mathematical structures and the physical π field. The unitary generalization of the meson chiral transformation is applied to the strong-interaction decay η*→η+2π. The predicted energy asymmetry of the η is consistent with observation.
