The transition probabilities between the Au L substrates L 1 , L 2 , L 3 ( mod m j mod = 1 / 2 ), L 3 ( mod m j mod = 3 / 2 ) induced by ion impact have been calculated employing the semiclassical approach. Even for He projectiles the collisional coupling cannot be neglected. This might explain the observed discrepancies between experimental ionisation cross sections and predictions of first-order theories.
