Experimentally determined properties of tokamak plasmas with horizontally elongated cross-sections are described. Axisymmetric instabilities restrict the semi-axis ratio b/a ≥ 0.85: with passive feedback control, it is b/a ≳ 0.75. These limits agree with theoretical predictions. Poloidal magnetic field oscillations confirm the semi-axis ratio predicted by equilibrium calculations.
