Hyperthermia, the application of a temperature elevation to approximately 43 degrees C to tumour tissue, is an important adjuvant cancer treatment. One of the main problems in treatment planning is predicting the influence of tissue blood flow on the temperature distribution. Isolated, perfused animal organs are suitable for studying this influence experimentally. The preparation of bovine tongues and the composition of the perfusion fluid are described. The perfusion technique used in the hyperthermia studies is described.
