Summary Molecular analyses of the elements that provide cell specific expression of genes in development, or co-ordinate the expression of a family of genes in a given cell type are reviewed. A number of genes have been shown to give rise to multiple transcripts. Gene transfer experiments have shown that many genes require large regions of flanking DNA to ensure their correct developmental regulation.
