A new integrated morphological and molecular study of the West and Central African freshwater crab genus Sudanonautes Bott, Citation1955, s.l. (Liberonautinae) indicated the presence of a deep phylogenetic division within this taxon as presently conceived. One lineage is recognized here as Magnaoras gen. nov. which is established to accommodate 12 species currently included in Sudanonautes s.l. Sudanonautes s.s. now only comprises six species, which are all compared with those assigned to the new genus. Identification keys are provided to the species assigned to Magnaoras gen. nov. and Sudanonautes s.s., and the seven genera now included in the Liberonautinae. The species included in Magnaoras gen. nov. and Sudanonautes s.s. are compared with, and distinguished from, other freshwater crabs occurring in this part of Africa, and updated species distributions are included for both genera.https://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A03837DE-A6A9-4F57-9E05-33680E70DE17
