REVIEWS liquids, the observed physical behavior of polymer solutions, and the general theory of continuous media. An unusual feature is an outline of molecular theory of rubberlike materials contained in parts of two chapters. The author emphasizes the material point of view and the use of convected reference frames. The level of presentation is appropriate to first-year graduate students, and the choice and organization of the subject matter may find favor in chemical engineering. The primary objective seems to lie to assist those who deal with experiments on viscoelastic liquids to a better understanding of continuum mechanics. If this objective is achieved, then perhaps any criticism of the book as a text on continuum mechanics should be withheld.Certainly, the fifty pages of the last chapter which are devoted to the general theory are inadequate.Let us hope that this chapter does not thwart the author's objectives by discouraging the reader from further study of a subject of such great importance and beauty of logical structure.
