The phototransformation of several 2‐alkylthio‐ and 2‐arylthiobenzothiazoles has been described. The influence of the polarity of solvent (n‐heptane and methanol), excitation energy of irradiation (λirr = 253.7 nm, λirr > 290 nm) and of oxygen upon the course of photochemical reaction have been investigated. Photochemical reactivity of studied benzothiazole derivatives depends on the structure of substituents in position 2 of the benzothiazole skeleton. Experimental results have pointed to the significance of polarity of reaction medium, excitation energy and presence of oxygen for the final composition of reaction mixture.
