Calcium metal was reacted with water vapor in the temperature range 20°–70°C and at water vapor pressures of 18–93 mm Hg. The experiments indicated that the only products were and H 2 and that the reaction proceeded according to the equation A manometric study of the reaction showed that it followed the logarithmic rate law. The rate constant was observed to be linearly dependent on water vapor pressure below 70deg;C and to decrease with increasing temperature in the range 20°–50°C. At 70°C the rate constant was observed to be independent of water vapor pressure. The activation energy was found to be −7.52 kcal/mole in the pressure dependent range.
