Marked demineralization of the entire skeleton occurred in a 12-year-old girl with chronic idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. It is postulated that the demineralization was directly related to the unusual severity of the hypocalcemia. The patient also manifested cardiac decompensation. There was no evidence of organic heart disease and the cardiac status improved coincident with the rise in serum calcium. It is postulated that the cardiac decompensation was the result of hypocalcemia.
