Observations upon Long-Distance Runners

The fiual auel culminating event in the Greek Olympian Games of 1896 was a foot race from the battlefield of Marathon to the stadium in Athens.The distance is 40 km., and the race was open to contestants from all parts of the world.The con- test was won by a Greek shepherd, none of the French, German, English or American runners being in sight at the finish.
