It is suggested that there is a bias toward quantitative methods in the social sciences. Notwithstanding, theory in the field of mortality research has had its genesis in qualitative as well as quantitative methodology. Several such contributions to thanatology are described, including small N , case study, grounded theory, and ethnographic approaches.
