Extensive literature on group treatment and a model for initiating a therapeutic group in psychiatric occupational therapy are examined by the authors. In this review a structural analysis of the group is discussed, i.e., group goals, cohesiveness, therapeutic contracts, selection of patients, leadership styles, time and place considerations, group models, therapeutic media and the evaluation of a group's effectiveness. Examples of reality orientation, values clarification and the soap opera as a dynamic group approach are described.
