One year ago in this journal, the author of an article on anesthesia for cataract surgery cited the lack of peer-reviewed studies of the safety and efficacy of topical anesthesias as a significant impediment to its adequate validation (Thornton, Curr Opin Ophthalmol 1993, 4;I:29–32). In the time since that literature review, similar studies have begun to appear. We can now start to compare the reported experience with retrobulbar, peribulbar, subconjunctival, and topical anesthetic techniques in routine cataract surgery.
