The effect of composition and heat treatment variations on the initial permeability and magnetostriction of a series of Mumetal type alloys containing 11·5-15·6% Fe, 4% Mo, 5% Cu, balance Ni were examined. Initial permeability levels in excess of 100 000 were obtained with most of these alloys showing that these permeability levels are not critically dependent on composition. The results are discussed in terms of the relationship between initial permeability, composition, degree of order, magnetostriction and magnetocrystalline anisotropy.
