The virtual eddy current method for shape optimization of coils consisting of free curves is presented. Optimum coil shapes are determined as paths of the eddy current are induced in a virtual thin metallic plate. For this purpose, the distribution of the magnetic flux density impressed on the plate is optimized. The formulation based on the electric vector potential method (T-method) is shown. The validity of the method is demonstrated by shape optimization of the field strength coil of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems.>
