This research work is undertaken within the framework of the theme of valorizing natural and local resources, specifically the stem of the Juncus effusus plant (Smar). The Juncus raw fibers have a short lifespan. Therefore, when they are chemically treated, a solution is created in order to limit their long-term degradation and to promote their mechanical properties. The main goal of this paper is to introduce the chemical treatment that was carried out by sodium hydroxide, with several concentrations (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%) during different time intervals (1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 4 h, and 5 h). The Juncus effusus fibers were mechanically characterized (through microtraction tests and thermal ATG) before and after treatment. The results revealed that the thermomechanical properties were enhanced after alkalization.
