Utilizing advances in understanding protein expression and trafficking, a new therapeutic strategy for inhibiting protein expression has been developed. This strategy uses an intracellular antibody ("intrabody") or intracellular chemokine ("intrakine") to neutralize the function of target proteins. One of the primary methods of achieving this goal is by redirecting the target protein to an intracellular compartment, such as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), where it may be trapped, thereby decreasing the surface expression or secretion of the protein.
