An effective medium theory is used to calculate the conductivity activation energy and the Seebeck coefficient for nearest-neighbour hopping in a band of Anderson localised states at the Fermi level. The results of these calculations are compared with experimental observations on cerium sulphide, fluorine-substituted magnetite and 'pure' magnetite Fe 3 O 4 .
