In adult viral infections thrombocytopenia has been encountered only infrequently—in rubella (1), infectious mononucleosis, and mumps but not, to our knowledge, in cytomegalovirus infections. We have treated an adult with profound thrombocytopenia associated with cytomegalovirus viremia and viruria. An 18-year-old man was admitted to Harbor General Hospital with a 3-week history of lethargy, fever, and recent bleeding from the gums. Numerous petechiae, confluent purpura on extremities, and posterior cervical adenopathy were present. His leukocyte count was 12 700 cells/mm3, with 44% neutrophils, 45% lymphocytes—60% of which...References1.
