Summary ABSTRACT Although the nursing literature contains many references to the teaching and support functions of nurses, a review of the consumer and other health care professional literature suggests that the potential importance of nurses in these roles is not widely accepted. A sample of 139 postmastectomy patients were interviewed to find out patients' perception of the teaching and support they received from nurses during their illness. Only 20% identified nurses as a significant source of information and 25% reported nurses were a significant source of emotional support.
