Qualitative study reveals journalist perspectives and operational hurdles regarding AI in ethnic media, highlighting key implications for community representation and discourse.
In many countries of the world, ethnic news media is undergoing technological transformation, resulting in the ways news is produced and disseminated. Therefore, the state of ethnic news media is much different today, with increased accessibility of news and audience engagement. The AI-driven technological developments have given rise to new conceptual frameworks and research agendas, underlining the need to explore AI-generated news and its far-reaching implications for the ethnic news media landscape in multicultural societies. However, there is a scarcity of qualitative studies that offer insights into how AI-driven transformations are reshaping the ethnic news media, and whether such developments have any implications social interactions and facilitating public discourse among members of ethnic communities that can strengthen their communicative practices for visible representation. Thus, drawing on cultural discourse studies (CDS), this study offers qualitative insights into ethnic journalists’ understandings of AI technologies in Pakistan, South Africa and Russia. It further identifies challenges and opportunities for ethnic journalists to use AI technologies in the aforementioned countries.
