Observational survey reports live East Asian ostracods in European river waters, highlighting ballast-water-mediated intercontinental dispersal.
The East Asian brackish-marine taxon Bicornucythere bisanensis (Okubo, 1975) is reported live from the Tagus River, Portugal, apparently transported live in ships’ ballast water, and believed not to occur between Asia and Europe. The morphology, lifestyle, ecology and occurrence pattern of B . bisanensis are well-documented; however, a background systematic problem is discussed. Natural and anthropogenic dispersal of exotic marine and nonmarine ostracods is reviewed.
