Narrative review shows that inadequate caloric intake causes fatigue and malnutrition in bariatric surgery patients, highlighting a lack of guideline consensus on energy requirements.
Purpose of Review: Energy balance is necessary to maintain a healthy life. It is known that negative energy balance can negatively affect nitrogen balance and cause some adverse effects, such as changes in body composition and muscle mass. It is stated that the negative energy balance resulting from decreased dietary energy intake in bariatric surgery causes weight loss. However, adverse effects of negative energy balance in bariatric surgery also need to be investigated. In this mini-review, studies examining patients’ energy requirements in current guidelines prepared for bariatric surgery, energy intake of patients, and adverse effects that may be seen in patients with inadequate energy intake were compiled. Recent Findings: After bariatric surgery, patients’ dietary energy intake decreases significantly. It has been shown that patients who consume insufficient energy or calories experience issues with fatigue and overall weakness. The guidelines for nutritional treatment in bariatric surgery do not provide a consensus on the energy requirements of these individuals. Summary: To prevent nutritional problems such as malnutrition and fatigue, the energy requirements of these patients must be determined accurately, and they must be provided with an adequate and balanced diet.
