Transmission characteristics for holograms formed in bleached photographic emulsion, recorded using both single and twin beams, are presented for holograms in both unswollen and swollen states. Differences in these characteristics have been used to determine the effect of swelling on both the desired grating and the spurious gratings formed when a hologram is recorded using two beams. Techniques of matching coupled wave diffraction theory to experimental results have then been used to determine the change in the material parameters of the desired grating following swelling.
