A novel intermetallic compound, TbCo7–xMx (M = 3d transition metal or normal metal), has been successfully synthesized. TbCo7–xMx crystallizes in a hexagonal TbCu7 structure with space group of P6/mmm. According to the structural refinement, the M dopants occupy the 2e and 3g crystal positions based on their electronegativities. TbCo7–xMx exhibits ferromagnetic order. The saturation moment has been calculated with a corrected magnetic valence model; the calculated results agree well with experiment. The correction to the structural stability model of TbCo7–xMx has been discussed in terms of the effective atomic radius ratio and the difference of electronegativity between Tb and (Co, M).
