The generalized Rayleigh's problem is considered as the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid produced by an infinitely long cylindrical solid surface, of arbitrary shape, moving parallel to its generators. A broad review of the literature is incorporated with further extension to new problems and new methods of solution. Some of the problems previously treated are investigated again with a different, and somewhat simpler approach, yielding the solution in new forms and additional information of interest. For the general case of an arbitrary cylinder, a perturbation method is established by means of an integral equation which can be solved by iteration.
