Electron microscopy of the conus medullaris and intradural filum terminale in the adult cat and monkey show a preponderance of ependymal cells, many of which are oriented around either a central canal or narrow clefts. Some rest directly on connective tissue. Randomly dispersed degenerating neural processes and fibrous astrocytic gliosis are prominent. Some ependymal cytoplasmic abnormalities also are present. The pathogenesis of these changes is unknown.
