New dimensional reductions and exact solutions for a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation are presented. These are obtained using an extension of the direct method, originally developed by Clarkson and Kruskal (1989) to study dimensional reductions of Boussinesq equation, which involves no group theoretical techniques.
