Evidence has been presented to show that sodium metabisulfite is a very satisfactory preservative for grass silage for the following reasons: It can be applied easily and uniformly to the fresh forage. It reduced drastically the losses due to fermentation. Forage can be ensiled in the unwilted state. Bisulfite silages were more palatable and nutritious than corresponding silages made from the same forages but without the addition of a preservative. Bisulfite silages were virtually free of undesirable and unpleasant odors.
