Using a comprehensive set of data on Soviet meat production and consumption in 1970, the magnitude of regional food imbalances is calculated, the type and amount of inter-regional exchange this imbalance generates is estimated, and the implications for losses resulting from inadequate processing capacities or inefficient transportation of perishable commodities are assessed.
