The amenability towards beneficiation by conventional technique of off-grade magnesite from Salem containing SiO2 as contaminant is not good. Winning of magnesia from sea water is very much capital intensive. Investigation carried out for upgrading off-grade magnesite following a new technique yielded promising result. Operating variables connected with the new approach were studied in detail and elaborated in the present paper. Following the new approach it has been possible to recover more than 80% magnesia of 94% purity with less than 3% silica content (cabined basis) from magnesite containing more than 10% silica (calcined basis).
